A Basic Guide to Training Dummies and Bumpers

First, “dummies” and “bumpers” are used interchangeably. Both names refer to those plastic, canvas and foam items used to train gun dogs. While they all share the same name, plastic, canvas and foam dummies all perform differently in the field. Choosing the right dummy can help your dog improve in his training.

Canvas Dummies
Most canvas dummies consist of a durable canvas material around a foam core. These are a great choice for starting out young puppies. The solid foam core provides a little resistance, and is pleasant for puppies to grab onto. You can also inject the core with a training scent, to introduce puppies to game birds. Some foam dummies will float, but you should check the manufacturer's specs to verify. And always make sure the dummy is made with non-toxic materials.

Plastic Dummies
Plastic dummies have a couple of advantages: they are durable, they float and they aren't as pleasant for dogs to pick up. (Give me a second, it does make sense). The ideal gun dog listens to and follows all of his handler's commands, not just the ones he feels like. If dogs become used to carrying the hard plastic, they'll have no problem with a downed bird. (If your dog really doesn’t like plastic bumpers, work with them until they overcome their dislike. Skipping over basic skills lays a poor foundation for more advanced commands.)

Plastic dummies are primarily available in three colors: black, white or orange. These aren't random options; the color of a dummy has an important function. Dogs can't see colors very well, but they can see contrast. White dummies stand out against dark backgrounds, and black dummies stand out against light backgrounds. Visible dummies are easier for dogs to find, and a good choice for building foundation skills. Orange dummies are a little more challenging. Dogs see orange as a shade of gray, and it blends into almost any background (think of orange as bumper camouflage). Because dogs can't see the dummy, they must rely on scent and/or cues from their handler. Orange dummies are preferable for teaching more advanced dogs blind and forced retrieves.

Foam Dummies
Foam dummies are less common than the canvas and plastic varieties: they tend to be more expensive and less durable. But foam dummies also have a few unique benefits. Most are shaped like specific game birds. Ducks are most common, but you can also find quail, dove, pheasants, etc. The realistic shape and softer material help dogs transition from hard, plastic cylinders to soft, lumpy bodies. Several models also feature loose necks and dangling heads which will bang against a dog’s face if the dummy is handled too roughly. This design feature helps dogs develop soft mouths and proper handling technique.

One of the advantages of foam dummies is also one of their drawbacks: they are excellent at retaining scent. Injecting a dummy with training scent makes them more appealing and easier to find. The foam bodies also retain the smell of pond water and dog slobber, and they can start to stink after awhile. Regular cleaning with a baking soda solution and storing them in a well-ventilated space seems to keep this problem in check.

Choosing a dummy frequently comes down to personal preference. Some people are committed to a particular type of plastic bumper or foam dummy. But considering your dog's needs when purchasing a bumper can make the training process easier and more rewarding for both of you.

1. Poolside: Whether your dog simply likes to lounge by the pool or make a big splash and doggy paddle its way to the other side, it is important to keep your dog safe and supervised. With the spring season just starting and summer quickly approaching, vacation time is on the rise. People are gearing up for road trips, weekend hikes and flights home. Bringing your dog along can be an incredibly rewarding experience, for both of you. Of course, traveling with your dog comes with its own special challenges. We found a couple of pretty cool products to make traveling with your dog less-stressful and more enjoyable.

1. Automotive Accessories: Road trips with your dog can be a lot of work, from the moment he gets in, to the long ride ahead and not to mention the clean-up afterwards. This can all be made easier with the assistance of a few essentials:

-Safety should be your first priority. A canine seat belt is a must for all doggy passengers. These harnesses keep your dog in place and protect him in the event of an accident. If you have a smaller dog, you may prefer a pet car seat over a seat belt: car seats provide extra cushioning and give little dogs a good view out the window. If your dog finds seat belts uncomfortable (this may be a problem for older dogs or dogs with disabilities), then install an auto barrier between the front and back seats. This allows your dog to freely move and lie down, but prevents him from distracting the driver.

-If your dog is small and has a hard time jumping into your car or truck, (or if he’s older and doesn’t have a lot of “jump” left ), consider getting a ramp or lift. Not only do these accessories make things easier for your dog, they save you the trouble of lifting him in and out of the car.

-And finally, seat protectors help you avoid the hassle of cleaning up unwanted hair and various debris that dogs can leave behind after a long car ride. There are a variety of styles and sizes available, to cover anything from bucket seats to back benches. Much more effective than old sheets or blankets, seat protectors stay in place and cover entire surfaces.

2. Pet carriers: If you’re traveling by plane, you will need to an appropriate pet carrier. Medium and large dogs must (sadly) travel in the cargo section of the plane, and each airline has specifications about the carriers they accept. If you’re flying with a small dog, however, you may bring her along with you in the passenger cabin. Again, each airline has its own specifications, but carriers that are certified “IATA compliant” are usually acceptable. Since you’ll be carrying your dog to and from your gate, give careful consideration to carrier’s design. Several models include a shoulder strap, so you can carry them like duffel bags. These are perfectly fine if you have a small dog and are in good physical condition. If, however, you have shoulder or back problems or if you have layovers on your flight, consider a wheeled carrier. Similar to wheeled suitcases, you can pull these sorts of carriers through the airport with little difficulty.

3. Travel Beds: Help your pet stay comfortable while traveling, whether you are staying in a hotel or at a relative’s, with a travel bed. It provides that extra comfort, especially if dogs feel uneasy sleeping in unfamiliar environments. Crate liners are functional and economical good choices. There are also “empty” beds that you stuff with newspaper or blankets when you reach your destination. These sorts of beds provide your dog with plenty of cushioning, yet take up almost no space when you’re traveling.

4. Travel Bowls: To keep your pet fed and hydrated while traveling, a travel bowl is ideal and can be easily thrown into your bag or in the backseat. If you’re going on a short trip, a soft-sided bowl may be your best option. These types of bowls can hold either food or water, and they fold almost perfectly flat between uses. If you’re going to be gone for several days, you may want to consider travel bowls with more structure, as they stand up better to continuous use. There are even travel bowls designed to store food and water as you’re traveling, and can therefore simplify your packing list.
